European Commission - Fisheries - The Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is the European Union's instrument for the management of fisheries and aquaculture. It was created to manage a common resource and to meet the obligation set in the original Treaties of the then European Community. Because fish are a natural and mobile resource they are considered as common property. In addition, the Treaties which created the Community stated that there should be a common policy in this area, that is, common rules adopted at EU level and implemented in all Member States.

The North Sea Commission Fisheries Partnership was founded to promote co-operation between scientists and fishers in monitoring and managing fisheries in the North Sea.

Danish Directorate of Fisheries - DTU Aqua with all aspects of sustainable and innovative use of fish and shellfish resources. In the area of commercial fisheries, we are researching fisheries management methods, catch technologies, determination of stock sizes, and how fish stocks are influenced by changes in the marine ecosystem. Our research in commercial fisheries is being put into practice in holistic advice to public-sector authorities and industry. This is advice contributing to and enabling sustainable fisheries.

The Fish in Denmark
It now became possible to obtain fresh fish. Boiled cod became a dish fit for a king, served with potatoes, melted butter and mustard or possibly mustard sauce.

Boiled plaice served simply with melted fresh butter and chopped parsley is no longer common. These days plaice is almost always served fried.

Smoked fish is another speciality from this period. From the late 19th century, the old-fashioned heavy curing ceased and subsequently fat fish were cold-smoked as a means of preservation.

This method was replaced by light curing followed by hot-smoking – exclusively in order to enhance the taste. This technique was used for the specialities smoked herring, smoked mackerel and smoked salmon.

In addition, the Danes ate bay shrimps, which are still bought alive, boiled, peeled and served on a slice of buttered bread.

Maritime Denmark
Denmark has long-standing maritime traditions with focus on quality shipping. The Danish Government has launched an agenda for growth in the maritime cluster and offers stable and competitive framework conditions. The Danish maritime administration provides international and expedient service of high quality.

Danish Food Safety - Danish Food Safety information website.

Danish Institute of Fisheries Research Danish Institute for Fisheries Research (DIFRES) is a research institution, which carries out research, investigations and provide advice concerning sustainable exploitation of live marine and fresh water resources. DIFRES deals with chain considerations from water to table. This includes interaction between the water environment and productivity and variation of the fish stocks, methods for assessment of the sizes of fish stocks, development of methods for sustainable fisheries management and stock enhancement. Moreover, processing and improvement of fish products as well as quality assurance in the fish industry are important parts of the research areas of the institution.

Denmark’s fishery tradition began more than 1000 years ago. Throughout the years, intensive research and development in methods and equipment has resulted in efficient, advantageous utilisation of fishing resources.

Danish companies invest considerable amounts of money every year in research and development for the fishing industry. An increasing number of worldwide problems have called for new cost-saving equipment in recent years and as competition becomes keener, still higher standards and approvals are demanded for fishing equipment and technology. Danish factories are equipped with modern production machinery and employ effective quality control methods.

The Danish Fishing Equipment Group represents leading Danish companies of all sizes within this industry and function as a link between Danish subcontractors and foreign buyers.

DTU National Instute of Marine Resources - Commercial fisheries, aquaculture, fish products, recreational fisheries.

DIFRES works with all aspects of sustainable and innovative use of fish and shellfish resources. Commercial fisheries covers four research areas:

Management of fish stocks and fisheriesResearch and advice on new and improved methods of fish-stock and fisheries management.

Fish stocks and fisheries - status and forecastsMonitoring and assessment of stocks and fisheries, and research on more accurate methods for use in future stock assessment and fisheries advice.

Marine ecosystems - status and forecastsKnowledge about future fisheries possibilities through research into hydrographic changes and changes in the food, behaviour and interplay of fish.

Fisheries technologies - selective fisheryResearch into fisheries technologies aimed at improving fishing gear and limiting its effect on the marine environment.

Federation of European Aquaculture Producers - The Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP) is an international organisation that is composed of the National Aquaculture Associations of European countries. The basic aims of the Federation are: * to develop and establish a common policy on questions relating to the production and the commercialisation of aquaculture species are reared professionally. * to make known to the appropriate authorities the common policies envisaged above.
